Absentee Voting (Early In-Person, Vote-By-Mail, Ballot Drop-Off)

The absentee voting period runs for 46 days prior to Election Day; for 2020, this means absentee voting (early voting) begins 8 a.m. on Fri., Sep. 18, and runs every* day through 5 p.m. on Mon., Nov. 2. *Early Vote Centers are not open every day – for hours and locations: https://vote.minneapolismn.gov/voters/vote-early-in-person/

  • Voter is already registered (those registered on or before Oct. 12):


  • Voter is not registered (for those who are not already registered by Oct. 12):


All voters must be registered to vote; if a voter is not registered by the registration cutoff date—Oct. 13—then that voter must also complete a voter registration application and sign it, which must also be signed by a witness.

All voters can use this online tool to track the status of their absentee ballot, showing when the ballot is issued, when it is received back (after voter submits), and whether accepted or rejected.

Key Dates in the Early Voting Timeline

Oct. 13: Pre-registration cutoff for the 2020 Presidential Election

Oct. 13: Second Ballot Drop-Off site opened at Convention Center

Oct. 14: Health Care Facility (hospitals & nursing homes) begins – separate team goes to collect ballots

Oct. 20: After 4:30 p.m., EVS will begin opening absentee ballots as allowed by law

Nov 2.: Final day for absentee (early) voting – service hours at all Minneapolis sites are 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Hennepin County will be open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
